I've been photographing New Norcia's Benedictine Community for the last 7 years and following their story as much as possible. With only a few monks on site the place has a lot of stillness and open spaces that are forgotten. With tourist buses coming and going and the rhythm of life for the monks and general commercial farming operations, the community is far from being forgotten. With the production of wine, olives (the oldest olive grove in Australia), wheat, sheep, canola fields and the old bake house, the town is alive with activity with the 20,000 acres of amazing land and over 25 historic buildings. The Monks use to do all of the food production and livestock but as numbers lessened their need for help grew into a huge commercial venture that has saved the community. Now exporting the fine produce around the globe, they have a bake house in Malaga and Mount Hawthorn, which has the old bake house over 100 year old, that keeps up with the demand. If you've never been there, you must visit. Drop past the Bindoon bakery on the way out Great Eastern Hwy.
